
Matt has worked to improve communities in the U.S. and abroad in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors for more than 20 years. Before co-founding BetterWorld Telecom in 2003, he served in a series of leadership roles in the telecommunications and power industries, including the AES Corporation, NETtel Communications and Valucom.
Matt serves on the national board of the:
- American Sustainable Business Council
- Business Alliance for Local Living Economies
He is on the steering committee for Ashoka Youth Ventures Bay Area.
He is a member of the Full Circle Fund and Social Venture Network and has either helped found or grow a number of non-profits over the past 10 years including Lowcountry Local First (Charleston, founder), DC-based Sitar Center for Children and the Arts, and the True Colors Theatre Company (Atlanta).
He holds a BA in Telecommunications from Indiana University and an MBA from George Washington University.
Matt is co-editor and author of the Nonprofit Guide to Going Green, published by Wiley & Sons in December of 2009. He lectures/speaks nationally on sustainability and telecommunications, most recently at Evergreen State College, Sonoma State, the Government Customer Support Conference, Green Telecom East, CTIA Green Telecom Summit, the FCC Broadband Workshop Series, the Nokia Siemens Green Telecom Summit, and as a CAIR at the Bainbridge Graduate Institute.

His Career History Includes:
- As President of BetterWorld Telecom, he grew the company from startup to over 1,500 business and non-profit customers in 40+ states and established BetterWorld Telecom as THE brand in the socially responsible business to business and non-profit voice and data communications space
- Managed business development initiatives in North, Central and South America ranging from building a competitive telecom carrier in Bolivia (10% market share in the first quarter of activity), to leading Powerline Communications pilots at AES power distribution companies in the U.S. and Brazil, as well as M&A/corporate development activities in Mexico, Venezuela, and Paraguay. Early on at AES served as Marketing Director for AES Subsidiary AES Communications - U.S., led the marketing and product management team in the rollout of a full services IP-based nationwide integrated communications carrier.
- As Marketing Director for NETtel Communications, a nationwide full-service B2B integrated communications provider, spearheaded the development and management of NETtel’s web based product line including web hosting, co-location, unified messaging and ASP services.
- As Director of Sales and Marketing for Valucom, Inc. in the mid to late 1990s, doubled the company’s revenue and expanded the company’s products and services into Europe and Pac Asia.
